ABOUT TONY BRAY
On February 26, Saxophonist/Composer Tony Bray brings his brand of acoustic fusion to Monk’s. He is joined by local jazz heavyweights Dan Redner on piano, Alex Freeman on bass and his longtime collaborator Aaron Easley on drums.
Tony Bray’s music life began in East Tennessee. During those early years his musical adventures included a Summer with the 27th Lancers Drum and Bugle Corp, a Summer at Interlochen Arts Academy and he was the drum major for his High School marching band.
During his school years Tony studied jazz improvisation and jazz pedagogy with Jerry Coker at the University of Tennessee between 1981 and 1985. Also studied saxophone with William Scarlett, Bennie Wallace and Warne Marsh at this time. He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Music in Studio Music and Jazz before moving to Los Angeles to study classical composition at California State Northridge.
As a freelance musician, he has performed on stages in clubs, casinos and cruise ships all over the world for over 40 years. Seventeen of those years have been right here in Central Texas as he has been a ‘gun for hire’ for corporate and wedding bands as well as other artists ranging from Henry Brun and the Latin Playerz to The Temptations. Tony can also be often found in one of the local orchestra pits backing award shows or musicals.
As a composer and producer, he has put out eight different jazz CDs. The most recent projects are in rotation on KRTU and can be found for download at Apple or Amazon. Look for “Man in the Black Hat-Tony Bray/Toro Flores Quintet” and “ Last Call by TBray and One Too Many.”
