Youth Jazz Orchestra Details
Students will audition to be selected and placed in orchestras and combos.
The program includes multiple concert cycles with emphasis on Jazz music that values Swing, The Blues, and Jazz culture & tradition as fundamental principles of the music.
The faculty-mentors are all professional jazz musicians and experienced educators with individual focus (expertise) on saxophones, trumpet, trombone, percussion, bass, and piano.
Youth Jazz Faculty
Weekly instruction consists of three components: the Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Combos and Studio Classes.
- The Jazz Orchestra will serve as the program’s flagship performing ensemble.
- Jazz Combos will be formed from the YJO. Students will have an opportunity to develop skills in small ensemble playing, Jazz improvisation, performance etiquette, as well as leadership.
- Studio Classes will deliver a well-defined and informative curriculum that focuses on developing several aspects of Jazz musicianship including: swing, phrasing, aural skills, improvisation, technique, theory, listening, transcription, repertoire, and history. The curriculum will be delivered by the faculty-mentors in studio classes.
