About Centerpeace
Dr. James Polk (1940-2024) was a legendary figure in the Austin jazz scene, widely regarded as the "Godfather of Austin Jazz." His contributions as a pianist, organist, composer, arranger, educator, and band leader have left an indelible mark on the city's musical landscape. Polk led the jazz sextet Centerpeace, showcasing his original compositions and arrangements, which continue to set the standard for Austin jazz.
Polk's musical journey began in 1958 when he moved to Austin to attend Huston-Tillotson University, graduating in 1962 with a degree in Music and Education. His career reached new heights in 1978 when he joined the Ray Charles Orchestra, where he served as pianist, organist, writer, arranger, and composer. During his decade-long tenure, he contributed to Grammy-nominated hits like "Some Enchanted Evening" (1979) and "Born to Love Me" (1983).
After his time with Ray Charles, Polk transitioned into academia, teaching music history and jazz studies at Texas State University from 1990 to 1996. He received an honorary doctorate from Huston-Tillotson University in 1995 and was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 1999. Even after retiring from teaching in 2006, Polk remained active in the music community, leading Centerpeace and performing with Church on Monday until 2022. He also mentored aspiring musicians through the Austin Jazz Society and the Dr. James Polk Academy of Arts and Technology.
Polk's passing in 2024 marked a significant loss for the jazz world, but his legacy lives on through his extensive catalog of over 800 original charts and the continued performances of Centerpeace, now led by Morris Nelms on piano. His innovative compositions, masterful performances, and dedication to education and mentorship ensure that his influence on Austin jazz will endure for generations.
