About Red Young


Musician, Pianist, Organist, Arranger, Vocalist, Performer, Bandleader and Artist RED YOUNG in his 50+ years in the music business has covered a lot of ground.

You have heard his work on recordings by Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton, Eric Burdon, Marcia Ball, Ray Benson, Kirk Fletcher, Janiva Magness, Ruthie Foster, James McMurtry and others (several hundred albums); TV shows such as  Everybody Loves Raymond, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Osbornes; Movies such as In The Line Of Fire and Indecent Proposal.

Live performances from Austin City Limits (Eric Burdon. Amos Lee, Hall of Fame), HBO (Linda Ronstadt Nelson Riddle), Rockpalast (Joan Armatrading, Eric Burdon): Tours with Eric Burdon, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Armatrading, Sonny & Cher, Lloyd Price and others in countless performances around the world;

Performances with his own bands Red & The Red Hots, Red Young & His Hot Horns, Brother Red, Red Young Organ and Piano Groups in clubs and on Sandy Beach Cruise (Delbert McClinton’s cruise for 19 years) and The Big Easy Cruise and festivals: Big Blues Bender – Las Vegas / Merlefest in NC with the Waybacks and playing with friends and backing up various artists.

Playing piano from age 3, first concert at 10 and first tour at 18, Red has worked with an eclectic roster of artists and put together his own groups that involve his various skills and talents as performer, keyboardist, vocalist, arranger and bandleader. If you want the big blues band sound then Red Young & His Hot Horns is it. RED on vocals, piano & organ, with drums, bass and 5 horns doing Ray Charles, Jimmy Witherspoon, Percy Mayfield, Count Basie, Charles Mingus and original material by Red Young.  

His latest album “Live From Austin” vol. 1 & 2, recorded at his residency at the famed club Antones in Austin, TX has taken Red to Delbert McClinton’s Sandy Beach Cruise, Ottawa Bluefest, Las Vegas Big Blues Bender and Caloundra festival in Australia as well as dates in California.

In addition to his 8 piece Hot Horn band, Red performs regularly in a variety of musical formats:

Red Young’s Tenor Madness – 2 tenor saxes jump blues and jazz standards @ the Elephant Room in Austin

 Red Young Organ Trio– saxophone, organ and drums jazz and soul jazz;

Piano Trio (Acoustic piano & vocals with various other musicians featuring original songs and standards from the jazz catalogue.

Brannen & Red Show Organ Drum Duo with drummer Brannen Temple – Wednesdays @ the Continental Club Gallery in Austin and other places.

Solo Piano Shows– from Chopin to Chick Corea and his own originals, vocals and improvisations in whatever comes to his mind @ Walkers Jazz Lounge (Wichita KS) and other spots.

Red uses his many skills as performer, vocalist, arranger, producer and personality to bring all of his various groups to life. The consummate musician and visionary. Red has no musical boundaries. It’s always an enlightening and entertaining experience whenever you see a Red Young performance.
