About
Hank Hehmsoth

Hank Hehmsoth: Pianist, Composer, and Visionary Artist

Based in Austin, Texas, Hank Hehmsoth is a dynamic figure in jazz, celebrated for his masterful piano playing, innovative compositions, and his unique ability to merge music with visual art. As an Associate Professor of Practice at Texas State University School of Music, he has had an illustrious career that includes performing over 10,000 concerts globally, across diverse genres ranging from classical to jazz, rock, and pop. A five-time Grammy© and Academy Award© winner (Christopher Cross), Hehmsoth's artistry spans a broad spectrum of musical styles and projects. He is a lifetime voting member for the Grammys©. His studio includes international students from Serbia, China, Columbia, South Korea and Chile.

Throughout his career, Hank has collaborated with renowned artists and bands, including Christopher Cross, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac, performing on some of the world’s most iconic stages from the Tokyo Budhokan and London Palladium, to the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall, NYC. He was featured in Broadway productions like Disney’s Beauty & the Beast, in symphonic works, notably collaborating with Philip Glass, and recently the William Morris Talent Agency featured Hank as principal pianist for the Academy Award© winning film “La La Land”.  Hehmsoth's talents extend into composing for films, documentaries, musicals, and even ballet, infusing his unique harmonic signature into every project. His accolades include being a MacDowell Norton Stevens Fellow in composition, National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Fellow, and Fulbright Senior Specialist in American Studies. His awards include placing first in the 2010 National Association of Composers USA competition and the 2024 ASCAP Plus Award for Jazz Composition.

Hehmsoth has released several albums as a bandleader, including the eponymously titled “Hank Hehmsoth - Piano”, “Exit”, “A Night of Chick Corea Jazz”, and “Night Rhythms”. Hehmsoth's most recent release, “Blu-Escape”, with his acoustic quartet Double Vision, exemplifies his forward-thinking approach to modern jazz. In addition to his performing and composing, Hank is an active research scholar, serving as a Jazz Research Fellow for Rutgers University's Institute of Jazz Studies, where his work in rediscovering historic jazz performances has been recognized nationally.
